Josephine's First Growing Post

Which set of fractions is larger 1/2 + 1/6 or 1/4 + 7/12?

1/2= 60 mins divided by 2 = 30 minutes.
1/6= 60 mins divided by 6 = 10 minutes.
30mins + 10mins = 40 mins or 4/6.
-----------------------------------
1/4= 60 mins divided by 4 = 15 minutes.
7/12= 60 mins divided by 12 = 5 minutes. Since there's 7/12 you have to multiply 7 by 5 which equals 35 minutes.
15mins + 35mins = 50mins or 5/6.
-----------------------------------
Therefore 1/4 + 7/12 is larger because there are more pieces and there are more minutes on the clock.

Josephine's and Angelica's Bikerace :

Me and my partner marked down the different stations in different colours so it would be easier for people to read it. And we also put abreviations of the stations next to it.

This bike race was 60 km course .
There was a ...

...Resting point every 1/8 of the way.
...Food wagon every 1/4 of the way.
...Water Stations every 1/10 of the way.
...Juice and Fruit Tables every 1/5 of the way.
...Km markers every 1/12, 1/6 and 1/3 of the way.

6. Do a google search for fraction games. Find a good site and write a review of the game. Tell everyone what is good about this site. You also need to create a link to the site.
- http://www.vectorkids.com/vkfractions.htm . In this game there is a picture of a fraction and all you have to do is figure out what the fraction is. I think this game is good because you learn how to make fractions (this game is really easy).

7.Go back to your picture of the bike race. Tell us all about how you calculated the Km positions at a twelfth, sixth and a third. did you see any patterns?
- Me and my partner divided 60 because there are 60 km in the race by 12, 6, and 3 because in the problem it said that the kilometer markers would be in those positions. And for the other stations we divided 60 by 8, 4, 10, and 5 (denominators of the fractions).

8. What are 2 different ways to find a quarter and 3/4 of a number. Use one of the following 16, 22, or 110.
- 16: To find out what 1/4 of 16 is, you have to divide 16 by 4 which gives you 4. To find out what 3/4 of 16 is you have to divide 16 by 4 which gives you 4 then you have to multiply it by 3 because theres 3/4 not just one, and that gives you 12. Another way to find out how to get 1/4 and 3/4 of 16 is to draw picture, like a clock.

9. Write a fraction question and answer it. It has to be a question like one you have had on a test. You may answer it in pictorial or word form.
- Which is Larger 1/4 + 1/6 or 6/12 + 1/3?
1/4 + 1/6 =...
1/4: 60 minutes / 4 = 15 minutes
= 15 minutes + 10 minutes = 25 minutes
1/6: 60 minutes / 6 = 10 minutes
_______________________________________________________________
6/12 + 1/3 =...
6/12: 60 minutes / 12 = 5 minutes * 6 = 30 minutes
= 30 mnutes + 20 minutes = 50 minutes
1/3: 60 minutes / 3 = 20 minutes
6/12 + 1/3 = 50 minutes is larger.
