It equals to that because 1/4 = 15 minutes when you change it into time. To do that you have to go 60 / 4 = 15, and then 2/4 turns into 30 minutes because 60 / 4 = 15......then you multiply by two then it equals 30 min. When you add this all together it would equal to 45 minutes, or 45/60, 9/12, and 3/4.
You do the same thing with 1/6 + 3/6. 1/6 would equal 10 mins because 10 / 6 = 10 or 10 minutes. Then 3/6 would be 30 minutes because 60 / 6 = 10 then you multiply by 3 witch equals 30. When you add this all together it equals to 40 min or 40/60,4/6, or 2/3.

Each person gets 3/4 or a sub. So if there is only on person he/she would get 3/4. If there was two he/she would get 1 1/2...... then it goes on and on.

1-------3/4
2-------1 1/2
3-------2 1/4
4------- 3
5-------3 1/4
Etc.......

I think 4/9 is not the same thing as 9/4 because when you divided them 4/9 becomes 0.444 etc and 9/4 becomes 2.25. The answer is totally different.karen_817https://www.blogger.com/profile/03760666290355623202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7849741104544917852.post-91513842560505464762007-10-09T21:44:00.000-05:002007-10-09T21:44:00.000-05:005/12+1/12 > 1/3+1/12 We need to convert the 1/3 i...5/12+1/12 > 1/3+1/12
We need to convert the 1/3 into a common denominator. Then you compare the fractions since both have the same denominator.

5/12+1/12 > (1/3+1/12 = 4/12+1/12)

Every person gets 3/4 of a sub. Every 10 people there are 30 subs. If there are 2 people you are adding 3/4's and 3/4's which = 6/4 or 1 1/2. Then you keep adding 3/4's for every person.

Therefore 4/9 is smaller than 9/4 because if we break it down to common denominators we get 16/36 < 81/36.Akytraphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02655730674818694141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7849741104544917852.post-40250051230598741092007-10-09T19:08:00.000-05:002007-10-09T19:08:00.000-05:001/4+2/4 > 1/6+3/6if you reduce both 2/4 and 3/6, t...1/4+2/4 > 1/6+3/6
if you reduce both 2/4 and 3/6, they both =1/2 so now we only have to compare 1/4 and 1/6. Becuase they're unit fractions, we need to compare the denominators. Since the smaller the denominator, the larger the piece, 1/4 > 1/6. So if you add the larger piece, 1/4 to 1/2 (2/4), the answer's going to be larger than if you add the smaller piece, 1/6 to 1/2 (3/6).

For every person, there's 3/4 of a sub so if there are 2 people, it's 3/4+3/4 for the # of people.
If you continue adding 3/4 for the # people, this chart will form:
people......subs
1...........3/4
2...........1 1/2
3...........2 1/4
4...........3
5...........3 3/4
6...........4 1/2
7...........5 1/4
8...........6

so far, both 4 & 8 people have a whole # of subs. They're both divisable by 4, and that's the denominator of 3/4. Also, the # of subs for 4 people is 3. 3 is 3/4 of 4. The same thing happened with 8 people. 6 is 3/4 of 8.
so to find the # of subs needed for 11 people, i'm first going to find the closes # of people that are divisable by 4 that is less than 11. That number of people is 8. 3/4 of 8 is 6 then add 3/4 to 6 and keep adding until i get to 11 people:
people......subs
9...........6 3/4
10..........7 1/2
11..........8 1/4
8 3/4 sub is needed for 11 people.

4 goes into 9 means 9 divided by 4.
If you make the *house* then the 9 would be in the inside, while the 4 is on the outside.4 goes into 9=2.25
4 goes into 9 doesn't mean 4 divided by 9 with 9 on the outside and 4 in the inside of the house.That would=0.44444 etc.So there's a big difference between 4 goes into 9 and 9 goes into 4.juudeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04855127264948231680noreply@blogger.com
