Ok, I am going to show questions and answers 5-8 from 2 days ago with Mr.Bartz.

Question 5:

Skateboards cost $36 each in my local store. The shopkeeper says if I buy 1 I can get another for only 7/9 of the normal price. How much would a second skateboard cost?

This is my math work: 36 divided by 9 = 4 x 7 = 28

The second skateboard would cost $28.

6. Billy collected 256 conkers but lost ? (use any number you want, I'm using 167) on his way to school through a hole in his bag. When he arrived at school how many conkers did billy have left?

256 - 167 = 89

Billy has 89 conkers left.

7. There are 25 pupils in the class. 3/5 of the pupils support Chelsea and the remainder of the class supports Arsenal. How many pupils support Arsenal?

25 divided by 5 = 5 x 2 = 10

10 people support Arsenal.

8. The local shop normally sells Mars bars for 40 pence. The shopkeeper says I can buy them for 1/4 less then the normal price. How much can i buy a Mars bar for?

40 - 10 (40 - 1/4) = 30

You can buy a Mars bar for 30 pence.

Kevin's Test Scribe

January 24, 2008.

Today in class we had a test on fractions.
It was a mixed test with adding, subtracting,
and multiplying. There was 4 questions and
in this scribe 2 of them our solved.

Now we are going to solve one of the answers together step by step.

7 / 8 x 4 / 5 =

When we multiply fractions we don't have to find a common denominator, all we have to do is multiply the denominators and the numerators.

8 x 5 = 40 ( denominator 40 )
7 x 4 = 28 ( numerator 28 )

Now our fraction is....

28 / 40 , But can we reduce that?

40 and 28 are both divisible by 4.

28 divided by 4 is 7
40 divided by 4 is 10.

OUR FINAL ANSWER IS........

7 / 10
------------------------------------------------------------------
Our next question is.....
2 2 / 3 x 4 1 / 2 =

Since we have a mixed fractions we have to
convert the fraction in to an improper fraction.
2 2 / 3 = 8 / 3
3 x 2 + 2 = 8

Now our new fractions are 8 / 3 x 9 / 2 =
4 1 / 2 = 9 / 2
2 x 4 = 1 = 9

The next step is multiply the numerators and the denominators.

8 x 9 = 72 3 x 2 = 6

72 / 6

The next part is to convert the
improper fraction into a mixed
fraction.

Since our denominator goes into the numerator evenly we are left with a whole number, witch is our answer.

OUR FINAL ANSWER IS.......
12

Ericks scribe

In class today we learned about multiplying fractions.

(For example in class we did 2 11/13 x 3 3/4)

  • First we convert the mixed fraction to improper fractions(small denominator big numerator).

((P.s the easy way to get a improper fraction is
Denominator x whole number + numerator= improper fraction

Okay so now the problem should now be
7/3 x 15/4

  • Now we have to multiply the numerators
But wait..... 7 x 15???? too much work sooo we do the wife swap so now its 15 /3 x 7/4 orrr 5/1 x 7/4. Nowww its 5 x 7 or 35!!!!

  • Now we multiply the denominators!!!

Now this will be pretty easy 1 x 4 = 4

Nowwww what you all have been waiting for ... the answer is ... 35/4????

And thats when we go to our final step which is....

  • * ALL ANSWERS MUST BE MIXED FRACTIONS!!!!

soo we do THIS....!!!!???

And our new answer is gonna be 8 3/4
So to summerize what we have learned,....
1. we have converted mixed numbers into improper numbers,....

2.we have multiplied numerators (and we also learned the numerator swap or "Wife Swap",.....

3.and we have converted a mixed fraction back into a improper fraction using the long division trick..

and i think thats the end of my scribe take cake PEACE!!!

In Class today we learned that we could switch the numerators to different denominators.
eg. 2/15 x 100/3=
Switched: 100/15 x 2/3=
We also talked about the multiplying the denominator's and numerators.
eg.

We also Checked the homework and we(me)figured out how to make the squares.
eg. 2/3 x 1/2
And For homework we got questions to do.

1. 2/5 x 1/4 =?

2. 3/7 x 1/6 =?

3. 7/8 x 2/3 =?

4. 3/5 x 15/16 =?

5. 4/15 x 5/8 =?

6. 3/10 x 5/6 =?

7. 2/3 x 9/20 =?

8. 4/5 x 1/5 =?

9. 8/9 x 1/12 =?

10. 3/8 x 8/15 =?

11. 2/15 x 100/3 =?

Today in class we learned a few new ways to multiply fractions

1: The first way was using a Array Model for example 2/3 x 1/2 would be shown like that-------------------------------------------------->

2: Another way was that we used standard form which is multiplying both numerators and multiplying both denominators to get the anwser for example

Also Kyle showed us a way which is if you have 1/2 x 1/5 you just switch the numerators/ denominators like so to make the multiplying easier..........................

Homework for today were some multiplying questions listed below

Show 2 Different ways for each!!!!

1/2 x 1/4
3/10 x 1/2
2/3 x 3/4
2/5 x 1/3
3/4 x 5/7
2/3 x 3/4
5/6 x 4/5
3/8 x 1/3
1/2 x 1/2
3/5 x 1/4
2/3 x 5/12

Tier's Scribe Post

Today in class, we were introduced to a new investigation. The investigation was explained to us in a SlideShare exactly like the one below.

As the SlideShare said, there are two lots with the same measurement in Brooklyn where playgrounds are going to be constructed. One lot is in a neighborhood called Carroll Gardens and the other one is in a neighborhood called Flatbush.
The plan for Carroll Gardens was, 3/4 of the empty lot will be a playground. And 2/5 of that playground will be a blacktop.
As for Flatbush, the plan was to construct a playground 2/5 of the lot. And 3/4 of that playground will be a blacktop.

At the end of the slideshow, we were asked these three questions:
- Is one neighborhood getting more blcktop than the other?
- Is there more blacktop space in one lot than the other lot?
- How would you convince the people in the two neighborhoods that your conclusion is correct?

I did my scribe using the "voice thread" :)

Exequelle's Scribe Question 1 and 2

Question 1 : 4/5 + 9/15
To solve this question you could use common denominators. You change 4/5 into 12/15. By multiplying the top and the bottom by 3. Then you add 12/15 + 9/15 which would = 21/15. Which would = 1 6/15. Then you have to simplify it and change it to 1 2/5.
You could also solve this problem by using clocks. 4/5 = 48/60 minutes and 9/15 = 36/60 minutes. Which = 84/60 or 1 hour and 24 minutes.
Question 2: 4 3/8 - 1 1/2
To solve this question you could also use common denominators. You can change 1 1/2 into 1 4/8. Then minus that from 4 3/8 to get 2 7/8. Then you can't simplfy it anymore you just leave it.
You could also use a number line. You make it out of 5. Then mark where
4 3/8 is. Then minus 1 4/8 from it. Then you get 2 7/8.

Angelica's Scribe Questions 5 & 6

Today in class we did a math test on adding and subtracting fractions. The questions that I'm scribing on is number 5 and 6.

THIS IS WHAT I DID FOR NUMBER 5...

For number five i used common denominator which was 21 because I multiplied 7 *3=21.
After I found the common denominator for the first question 2 3/7 it takes 7 groups of 3 to get to 21 so i multiplied 3 the numerator my 3 too. So it would get me 9/21. For the second fraction i did the same thing but multiplied 3 by seven because it takes 7 groups of 3 to get to 21. Then i multiplied 2 by 7 equals 14. The answer is 23/21. That is an improper fraction so 21 goes into 23 one time and there is 2 left over. Then after i just added all of the whole numbers together. So the answer is 5 2/21.

#5
FIRST STEP:

SECOND STEP:
For number six i did common denominators again. I used 54 for my common denominator beccause i multipilied 9 and 6 together which equals 54.

After i found the common denominator for the first question i multiplied the eight by 6 which equals 48/54 and then i mulitiplied the 5 by nine in the second question which equals 40/54. So i added 48 and 45 together and it equals 93/54. Again its a improper fraction so i just did how many groups of 54 goes into 93 and it only goes into 93 only one time then there would be 39 left over. 1 39/54. AFter i added all of the whole numbers together and got 8 39/54.

Chris's Scribe

Yesterday at school we reviewed subtracted fractions and the different strategies used to answer them. The Strategies that were used were double number lines, money, clocks, and common denominators.

Our homework was to use 3 different strategies for 4 fraction questions.

The questions are 1) 2 1/5 - 3/10, 2) 3 1/4 - 5/8, 3) 1 2/3 - 7/12, 4) 6/7 - 4/11

In this example i found out a common denominator both denominators went in to and
10 was a simple one. When changing the 5 to 10 x2 you multiply the 1 by 2 to get 2 you have to do the same to both numbers of a fraction. getting that u cant take 3 away from 2 so i had to borrow from my whole. so instead of 2 wholes i had 1 and now had a numerator of 12. 12 - 3 = 9 1-0 = 1 so
1 9/10.

This example shows a common denominator again. To get my common denominator i multiplied 7x11 and got 77 i divided 77 by 7 and 11. to get 11 and 7 this is so i know how much to multiply my numerator. From that i multiplied 11x 6 because i x the denominator by 11 then 7x4 because i multiplied that denominator by 7. from multiplying i got 28 (4x7) and 66 (6x11). then 28-66 is 38. 38 over 77

Just to change it up for now i did this one in clocks. in my example the filled in red circle is 60 minutes the whole. as u can see in my next clock isnt the best coloring but it does the job shows that 2/3 is 40 minutes. Then my other clock shows 7/12, i divided 12 by 60 to get 5 then multiplied it by 7 to get 35 minutes. Then i subtracted. 40-35=5 minutes. Since the whole (1) wasnt borrowed or had to subtract another whole you dont need to change it.

I took long in making my other examples to be more explainable that i did this one quick. This one is easy to do common denominator because 4 goes into 8 2 times, since i x2 to the denominator i do the same to numerator and get 2 i am not able to take 5 away from 2 so i borrowed the whole to make a numerator to equal 12 then took away 5 to get 7. my answer is then 2 7/8.

Today in class we reveiwed our strategies. Are strategies were the lock, ratio table, money, double number line and common denominator.

Clocks
We had to list all the factors of 60 in ascending order. We did this over and over for every strategie.

1,2,3,4,6,10,15,20,30,60

We then answered some question.
3/4 + 2/12 2/3 + 6/20 7/12 + 3/10

Money

1,2,4,5,10,10,20,25,50,100

3/4 + 1/5 13/20 + 1/4 3/5 + 7/10

Double Number Line
(common denominator)

Ugly Fractions

To use this strategy you must multiply the denominators to get the common denominator.
Example

3/8 + 7-11

33/88 + 56/88
(8 * 11=88)

4/9 + 1/4 = 6/17 + 3/5 4/13 + 2/3

In class today we were working with fractions.
We talked about ordering fractions and how
fraction show part of a whole and how they
showed division.

Today we worked in our table groups and came
up with 3 fraction each that were not the same.
Then we arranged the fractions on a number line
in ascending order.

STEP: 1

( Here are the Fractions My group came up with. )

You are allowed to have two equavelent fraction but
no more than 2.

STEP: 2

-----------------------------------------------
Then we were asked to each come up with 2 mixed
fraction in our groups and order them in numerical order,
and not on a number line.

Make sure your fractions aren't too large.

HOW DO FRACTION SHOW A PART OF A WHOLE ?

Now we have to prove how fraction show part of a whole.
I did this by...........

Last but not least we had to make three addition
questions with the edition of 2 that are mixed fractions.
that is deue on tomorrow's class.
